7-Eleven is an international chain of convenience stores.
Flirtey, a Nevada-based delivery services firm claims that it has become the first to complete drone-based delivery in the US. The company boasts of having completed 77 successful drone deliveries for 7-Eleven till now.
The CEO of Flirtey said in a press release: “We have now successfully completed the first month of routine commercial drone deliveries to customer homes in partnership with 7-Eleven.”
“This is a giant leap towards a future where everyone can experience the convenience of Flirtey’s instant store-to-door drone delivery.”
According to the company, it successfully completed 77 drone deliveries to selected homes of its customers in the US. The customers had signed up for a special application that delivered orders during weekends in November.
The company also says that the orders delivered include items such as food, medicines and other products that were wrapped in a special container. The GPS-enabled drones find the destination of the order, delivers the product and return back to its source.
The company also reported that the drones took less than 10 minutes to deliver the items to its customers. It also says that the popular items delivered include items such as hot food, cold drinks, and medicine for headaches or flu.
Flirtey and 7-Eleven, an international chain of convenience stores has plans of expanding its drone delivery services starting from 2017.
Amazon had completed its first drone delivery in the UK and expressed hope that it can extend the drone delivery service to other countries.
The first Amazon drone delivery was completed after books were delivered to a customer near Cambridge, England, announced Chief Executive Jeff Bezos.
“First-ever #AmazonPrimeAir customer delivery is in the books. 13 min—click to delivery,” he wrote of the December 7 order.
The aviation regulations in the United States have been playing spoilsport for the ambitious plan of Amazon to start drone delivery.
Other than Amazon, Google’s parent company Alphabet is also working on its own drone delivery service called Wing and there are unconfirmed reports that US retail giant Wal-Mart is also studying drone deliveries.
The first ever drone delivery in the US was completed by 7-Eleven in July using the drone provided by Flirtey that transported a chicken sandwich, hot coffee, and donuts to a customer near Reno, Nevada.
