Natya Gurjari, a new organization based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, staged at Gujarati play ‘Parnu to Ene J Parnu’, at the Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Cultural Arts Center, in Maryland, on December 3.
Veteran local theater personality Jay Joshi is the founder of Natya Gurjari. Joshi has been producing and acting in Hindi plays staged under the banner of Pravasi Kala Manch for over 15 years and also has now undertaken the endeavor of staging Gujarati Plays.
Natya Gurjari is a non-profit organization founded with the explicit objective of sustaining and enhancing rich cultural heritage in performing arts and literature via Gujarati theater. Gujarati plays will be staged using local resources and with the assistance of abundant talent available in the community.
‘Parnu to Ene J Parnu’ is a three-act comedy play written by Bakul Tripathi based on Moliere’s French Play ‘Le Malade Imaginaire’. A near houseful audience of over 450 people enjoyed the presentation.
Joshi did the stage adaptation of the script and also directed the play. Bharati Joshi and Kirit Udeshi were producer and executive producer, respectively. The talented cast included Jahnvee Solanki, Vishal Parikh, Mihir Shah, Apurva Vaidya, Jigna Shah, Priti Vasavada, Ashesh Shah, Mahesh Joshi and Jay Joshi.
The overall presentation was also enhanced by the expert contribution of the production crew. Dalvinder Multani designed the sets, Paresh Parekh managed lights, Prasen Vasavada contributed as a sound manager, Goldie Manocha did make-up, and Nilay Bhatt as well as Ilona Desai helped as stage managers. Raj Shivjiani, Bala Chandran and Amandeep Kaur also extended their assistance. Kirit Udeshi anchored the program as a master of ceremony.
The Gujarati Samaj of Metropolitan Washington and Shrinathdham, DC Metro area were the sponsors of the play. The net proceeds were donated for the charitable cause of the Shrinathdham Haveli Project.
The President of Gujarati Samaj, Ashitaben Patel, and Amit Bhai Shah and Vijay Bhai Shah of Shrinathdham worked tirelessly to make the staging of the play a great success, according to a press release.
