Bera also acknowledged India’s rise as a major naval power.
Indian American Democratic Congressman Ami Bera said that US-India relationship will burgeon under the new administration, the Asian Age reported on Thursday. He said that both countries will be key allies in addressing challenges of the world in the 21st century.
Bera said that the US should join hands with democracies that share similar values to take the world forward.
He said the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US will serve great importance and also the appointment of the US Ambassador to India will be something that will be closely watched.
Bera, who along with Congressional colleagues is pushing US-India relationship in defense, trade and economy, said they are optimistic about the partnership between the two countries. He also added that strengthening of US-India relation is of top priority for him and said there are plans of setting up regular meetings between the lawmakers of the two countries.
He shared his hope that the Trump administration will do all things possible to keep up the pace at which US-India relations developed during Obama administration. He also quoted former Vice President Biden saying that US-India relationship could be the defining relationship of the 21st century.
“What we have in common beyond just our democracy is the potential to work together, to address challenges throughout the world, and I think in the 21st century, it’s America working with its partners,” he said. “Other things that we’d like to see we pushed in the last Congress have India become a permanent member of the UN Security Council. We will resume that push. We’ve seen tremendous work together on the defense to defense relationship.”
Bera also acknowledged India’s rise as a major naval power, helping to stabilize the Indian Ocean region.
“This is why I think it’s important for people like myself to speak out that our values are still the same values. We want the best and the brightest from around the world and we want America to be an inclusive country,” he added.
