Sanders is the longest serving independent in US congressional history.
Indian Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna met Senator Bernie Sanders on Wednesday and discussed Indian Economy and US-India relationship, said a tweet by the Indian Embassy in the US.
The tweet said: “Ambassador Navtej Sarna warmly received by Sen. Bernie Sanders; enjoyed discussing positive outlook for Indian economy, strong #IndiaUSbonds & shared regional perspectives.”
Sanders who is the longest serving independent in US congressional history had lost to his fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primaries. Bernie is now serving his second term in the US Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote.
Sanders and Trump are on opposite sides when it comes to some of the major decisions taken by the latter after holding the office of the President. Sanders had attacked Trump’s position on climate change and called it “pathetic and an embarrassment to the world.”
In a tweet supporting Sen. Al Franken’s proposed bill to bring down the skyrocketing price of prescription drugs Sanders tweeted, “I hope my Republican colleagues and Mr. Trump will have the guts to support this bill and others and take on the pharmaceutical industry.”
Sanders opposed the guest worker programs and has also been skeptical about the H-1B visa program. “It does not make a lot of sense to me to bring hundreds of thousands of [foreign] workers into this country to work for minimum wage and compete with American kids,” Sanders once said.
According to the Indian Embassy, the Sarna-Sanders meeting was restricted to discussions on US-India Relationship, Indian economy and a few other issues.
