A document reveals that the Narendra Modi government was prompt in ensuring compliance regarding the improper presentation of the Indian flag.
The Indian government did not let Amazon get away with selling doormats resembling the Indian flag. According to a document, the Modi administration had asked the Indian embassies in the US and Canada to take up the matter strongly with Amazon leadership, Reuters reported.
The document mentioned that the Government of India made sure that the e-commerce company immediately removes such articles from all its websites. As per the report, “India also escalated the matter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and prompted a global audit by the company to “ensure that such products are not listed on any of its other” websites around the world, according to the document.”
In January, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had threatened Amazon to tender unconditional apology for insulting the Indian flag. Swaraj tweeted that if it is not done then the Indian government would not only stop issuing visas to the company officials, but “rescind the Visas issued earlier.”
In response to the Indian government’s strong objections, Amazon assured the government that it would keep check on the products sold by the third-party vendors on the website. Reportedly, the company told the government that it is “ fully committed to respecting Indian laws and customs.”
