India is an inevitable market for tech giant Google, but one of the hurdles that Google services faced in the country is limited connectivity and bandwidth. On Tuesday Google rolled out its ‘YouTube Go’ app for India, which first unveiled in September last year.
The application helps the Indian users to watch videos even in areas with poor connectivity. The app has been launched in a beta phase, but Google plans to launch it to a wider audience early next year.
“Today, after months of expanded testing and refinement, we are happy to announce that we are making the beta version of YouTube Go available for download on the Google Play Store in India,† the company’s Product Manager Jay Akkad said in a statement through official YouTube blog.
The app is designed to be offline first and improve the experience of watching videos on a slower network. It gives the users more control over data usage, by providing choice and transparency into the amount of data spent while streaming or saving videos. It also allows sharing videos quickly and easily with friends nearby.
According to YouTube official blog, YouTube Go home screen features trending and popular videos and allows users to preview videos before saving or watching. It also allows choosing the resolution, while saving or streaming videos, and the amount of data you would like to spend on that video.
“While the app is in its beta release, we’ll continue to listen to your feedback and improve the app before launching more broadly. We’ll also be holding several activities in Udaipur over the upcoming weeks to glean more insights from users on the ground,†the statement read.
“With the rapid transformation sweeping India’s mobile internet landscape, we know there will be an even greater demand for a fast and accessible video app,†the company added.
