The East Area Progressive Democrat called his remarks “caustic and callous”
Los Angeles’ City Council candidate Joe Bray-Ali has lost endorsements of the Los Angeles Times, City Councilman Mitch O’Farrell and an Eastside Democratic group, just a day after he apologized for his comments on uncensored online forums.
The Muslim Democrat with mixed Hungarian-Jewish-Irish-Indian Angeleno origin has apologized for his bigoted, racist and fat shaming comments on online forum Voat.
The 38-year-old bike advocate, who is contesting to topple incumbent Gil Cedillo in Council District 1, added to the controversy admitting cheating on his wife, failing to pay taxes and continuing to make indecent comments on his Facebook page.
The Los Angeles Times on Thursday published an editorial confirming that the publication has revised the endorsement.
“The revelations (about Bray-Ali) are so deeply disturbing – raising serious questions about both his judgement and his character – that The Times has re-evaluated its original position,” the editorial read.
The news paper further added that they did not endorse Bray-Ali’s rival Gil Cedillo in the May 16 face off.
Councilman Mitch O’Farrel, who earlier endorsed Bray-Ali rejecting fellow Councilman Cedillo, also criticized Bray-Ali’s online activity.
“I am deeply disappointed by his highly insensitive comments in online forums that breed hate and dehumanize already marginalized communities,” Los Angeles Times quoted O’Farrell’s statement. “People that I love and care about are hurt by these comments. There is no place for this type of speech anywhere, especially in the City of Angels.”
The East Area Progressive Democrat called his remarks “caustic and callous” and also revised their endorsement.
“They undercut the candidate’s claim of readiness to represent all the people of our diverse Eastside neighborhoods,” the Times quoted the group’s statement.
