Shah started his mission to clean up the Versova beach on October 2015
The US Embassy India on Monday congratulated Indian environmental activist Afroz Shah for his efforts in organizing 85-week effort to clean 5 million kg rubbish from Mumbai’s Versova beach.
Sharing a news link about the initiative on Facebook, the Embassy praised Shah’s initiative and members of United States’ Mumbai Consulate, which has also been a part of the cleanup movement for the commendable community initiative.
Chargé d’Affaires, US Embassy, MaryKay Loss Carlson also congratulated the team through her twitter handle.
Shah, a young lawyer from Mumbai and the first Indian to get an UN Earth Champion Award last December, started his mission to clean up the Versova beach on October 2015.
He inspired volunteers to join him and managed to get the support from the United Nations as well. From Bollywood celebrities to slum dwellers, volunteers joined him to clean the 2.7 km (1.67 mile) beach stretch that was covered with litter a year-and-a-half ago.
In the 85th week, Afroz Shah shared the image of the clean beach on his social media accounts.
“Week 85 of cleanup. Versova beach is gorgeous and clean now. we have done our bit. We need to maintain it,” he wrote.
