Just in 2016, the education content on YouTube has seen four times growth.
India’s online education system is expected to grow eight times and touch $1.96 billion business by 2021, according to a report released on Tuesday by Google and KPMG. The report, Online Education in India: 2021, said that the online education market has already grown 200 percent in the last two years, the Financial Express reported.
The report said that a major portion, about 44 percent, of searches regarding education were emanating from the six Indian metros. Interestingly, consumption of education content grew four-fold on YouTube in 2016.
Just the online certification and re-skilling segment were valued at a whopping $93 million for last year. This, according to the report, is expected to reach $463 million by the year 2021. In addition, nearly 260 million students are from the primary and secondary education categories. This segment would reach $773 million by 2021, the report said.
“The online education segment is set to become a multi-billion dollar opportunity in India. There are many factors driving this growth including the perceived convenience, increased reach and personalization offered by online channels,†Google India’s Industry Director Nitin Bawankule was quoted by the Financial Express as saying. “It is also interesting to note, that high growth in education search queries is now coming in from Tier 2 and 3 cities such as Patna, Guwahati, Aligarh and Kota – which points to the opportunities that growing penetration of smartphones and improving quality of internet have opened up.â€
