Day-Lweis will play the role of an haute couture dressmaker in his final movie
Actor Daniel Day-Lewis has decided to retire from acting and his final film directed by Paul Thomas is all set to release on this year’s Christmas day.
The 60-year-old three-time Oscar winner confirmed the news with a statement through his official spokesperson and refused to make any further comments, variety.com reported.
“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.
According to a report in pagesix.com, Day-Lweis will play the role of an haute couture dressmaker in his final movie. The untitled drama revolves around the world of high fashion of 1950s London and the actor wants to go out with a bang. He’s been planning this move for some time.
Reports also suggest that the movie name could be ‘Phantom Thread’ but the distributor Focus Features says the movie is still untitled.
One of the most acclaimed actors of his generation, Day-Lewis earned three Academy Awards for his performances in My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007) and Lincoln (2012). He is the only male actor in history to have three wins in the lead actor category and one of only three male actors to win three Oscars.
Day-Lewis, who is the son of poet Cecil Day-Lewis and English actress Jill Balcon, is known for his meticulous selections.
“He’s so method, it takes him three years to prepare for a role,” pagesix.com quotes a source.
Earlier, he took a five-year break in the 90s and worked a cobbler in a fancy shoe factory. As he has learned and researched so much about couture fashion for the new film, many suspect that he may stick with the profession and will soon become a dressmaker in real life.
