More than 100 students from Kolkata attended the fair in which 21 universities from the US interacted with them.
India ranks second in sending students to pursue higher studies in the US after China, said US Consulate General, Public Affairs Officer, and Director of the American Centre, Jamie Dragon on Sunday, reported The Indian Express.
Speaking at the USIEF-EducationUSA University Fair 2017, organized by the US-India Educational Foundation in Kolkata, Dragon said China tops the list with a double number of students going to the US for studies.
“As per the statistics, India is no. 2 behind China. Going by the last academic year’s figures, there are around 1, 66,000 Indian students studying in the US while China has 3, 20,000 students approximately. China surpassed India about six years ago and the gap (between the number of Indian and Chinese students going to the US) is increasing,” said Dragon, who inaugurated the fair.
According to the official, Kolkata sends less number of students to the US for education compared to other metro cities in India. “I do not have actual statistics on Kolkata students. But just looking at the size of the visa offices in the country, Kolkata has one of the smaller offices. My sense is that the domain in Kolkata is not that high compared to other metros,” Dragon said.
He said details about the recent change in the number of students going to the US for pursuing higher studies will be known once the figure for this academic session is out.

“Engineering and business are the two most popular subjects among foreign students at our institute. We have about 4,500 international students. Every year we get about 500 to 600 fresh international students. China is number one and India is number two in terms of sending foreign students to our institute,” said Katherine Mangum, coordinator of international recruitment for Iowa State University.
