Setting a record for the Forbes Power Women list, 23 new women have found a place in the list.
Indra Nooyi, the Indian American CEO of PepsiCo has been featured on the list of Forbes World’s Most Powerful Women. Along with Nooyi, actress Priyanka Chopra, and banker Chanda Kochhar have also made it to the 2017 list along with three other Indian women.
Nooyi was ranked 11 in the list of most powerful women for leading PepsiCo when it has been facing a tough time due to changing market conditions.
“Nooyi is trying to push Pepsi toward healthier offerings while marketing to customers who aren’t ready to give up their Mountain Dew. While soda consumption has been declining in the U.S. for more than a decade, finding the right approach to growing the business isn’t easy,” noted Forbes.
Indian American Nikki Haley, who is serving as the US Ambassador to UN under the Trump administration, took a 43rd position on the list.
“A newcomer to the Forbes Power Women list, Haley, the first Indian American to serve as a US Governor (of South Carolina), has been confidently walking a fine line at the United Nations,” said Forbes.
Kochhar, who is the CEO and MD of ICICI Bank, was ranked 32 on the list. A prominent business leader in India, Kochhar has extended the community outreach programs of ICICI.
“Her ambitious community outreach program, ICICI Digital Village, brought vocational training to over 11,000 villagers in 17 states in India and provided financial tools to aspiring entrepreneurs. The program expects to reach 500 more villages by year’s end,” said Forbes.
She also made history in September when she took the bank’s insurance business public, the first IPO of a general insurer in India. Last May, she became the first Indian woman to receive the prestigious Woodrow Wilson award for global citizenship.
HCL Corporation CEO Roshni Nadar Malhotra took the 57th position, followed by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Founder-Chair of Biocon, at 71 and Shobhana Bhartia, Chairperson and Editorial Director, HT Media, at the 92nd place.
Actress Priyanka Chopra, “the most successful Bollywood actor to cross over to Hollywood,” was ranked 97. Forbes said, “She began her acting career in 2003, and has since appeared in more than 40 Bollywood films, making her US big screen debut in 2017’s Baywatch. As the star of ABC’s Quantico, she is one of the TV’s highest earning actresses and the first Indian actor to lead a drama series on American television.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel tops the list followed by the UK Prime Theresa May, Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and GM CEO Mary Barra.
