President Donald Trump has once again reiterated that he will end the diversity visa program based on a lottery system and the policy that allows naturalized citizens to bring family members to the US.
Speaking at White House on Tuesday, Trump said, “We’re going to end both of them.â€
The latest announcement has come on the backdrop of Ayaked Ullah, a 26-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant blowing a pipe bomb in Times Square subway station on Monday.
The incident that injured Ullah and two others has been seen as an act of terrorism and federal charges have been slapped against the Bangladeshi man who made legal entry to the US with the help of a relative who is a naturalized citizen.
According to a Tyler Houlton, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman, Ayaked Ullah’s relative immigrated to the US visa through a diversity visa program and the suspect came to the country using the possibility of the fourth family-based green card preference.[irp]
“The Department of Justice is relentless in taking on the terrorist threat,” said Attorney General Sessions.
“To make law enforcement’s job easier, however, Congress must finally fix our broken immigration system so that we admit to this country those who are likely to succeed, not violent criminals, gang members, terrorists, or their sympathizers,†he added. “The fact that somebody won a lottery or is someone’s relative tells us nothing about their ability to assimilate. Nevertheless, the Department of Justice will prosecute this case and every other case to the fullest extent of the law, and we will bring those who threaten America to justice.â€
Ullah tried to detonate the bomb strapped onto him during the rush hours in New York City and he stood in the tunnels under Port Authority plotting to kill many. According to the Department of Justice, Ullah did the vicious act in support of horrendous ISIS.
An investigation done by NYPD and Federal Agencies have found that Ullah made the pipe bomb used for the attack at his Brooklyn residence. The bomb had materials such as Christmas tree lights, metal screws, wires, explosives and a nine-volt battery as a trigger to detonate the Pipe Bomb. [irp]
A manufacturing lapse from Ullah, fortunately, didn’t cause the bomb to blast in its full potential. According to authorities, the attack was planned as retaliation to the United States policies in, among other places, the Middle East.
According to the Department of Justice, Ullah’s radicalization began in 2014. “Ullah viewed pro-ISIS materials online, including a video instructing, in substance, that if supporters of ISIS were unable to travel overseas to join ISIS, they should carry out attacks in their homelands. He began researching how to build IEDs on the Internet approximately one year ago,†said Department of Justice.
Ullah even posted a statement on his Facebook wall ridiculing Trump for not been able to protect the country.  “Trump you failed to protect your nation,†he wrote.
Ullah also posted a statement that he believed would be understood by members and supporters of ISIS to convey that Ullah carried out the attack in the name of ISIS.
“I am today starting the process of terminating the diversity lottery program,†Trump told reporters before a midday Cabinet meeting, adding: “It sounds nice. It’s not nice. It’s not good.â€
The diversity lottery program was introduced in the House bill in 1990 by Schumer and that helped create the visa program.
Trump attacked Schumer in a tweet that read, “The terrorist came into our country through what is called the “Diversity Visa Lottery Program,” a Chuck Schumer beauty. I want merit based.”[irp]
In another tweet, Trump wrote: “Senator Chuck Schumer helping to import Europes problems” said Col.Tony Shaffer. We will stop this craziness!â€
“I guess it’s not too soon to politicize a tragedy,†Schumer tweeted in response to Trump’s message.
