Jaishankar, who replaced Sujata Singh in January 2015, served as India’s top diplomat for three years. The 1977 batch Indian Foreign Service officer is India’s longest serving foreign secretary in four decades.
Previously, Jaishankar served as India’s ambassador to the United States. He played a key role in negotiating India’s civil nuclear agreement with the United States, which was signed in 2008. He was India’s ambassador to China from 2007 to 2009.
The former foreign secretary has been an influential figure in shaping India’s foreign policy in the past three years.
Gokhale, who is also a former envoy to China, took charge on Monday and will have two-year tenure as the foreign secretary. The 1981 batch IFS officer, who knows mandarin, played important role in resolving the 73-days-long Doklam standoff between India and China.
