Founded in 1982, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) represents more than 80,000 Indian American physicians across the country.
The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, better known by its acronym AAPI, is trade group representing more than 80,000 Indian American physicians. According to the organization’s website, one in every 7 Americans is touched by the care of†an Indian American physician.
AAPI’s current president is Sudhakar Jonnalagadda, a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist, based in Douglas, Georgia. He is the 37th president of the organization. Since its founding in 1982, AAPI has been led by several prominent Indian American physicians, including Dr. Navin Shah (1985-1986), a Maryland urologist; Dr. Kiran C. Patel, a Florida cardiologist, philanthropist and entrepreneur (2002-2003); Dr. Vinod K. Shah (2009-2010), an internist and cardiologist based in Hollywood, MD; and Dr. Narendra Kumar (2012-2013), a Michigan ENT doctor.
The organization has a philanthropic arm, AAPI Charitable Foundation (AAPI-CF), which is involved in conducting free clinics and health fairs in India.
