India’s first baby with a rare congenital disorder of Harlequin Ichthyosis died on Monday at Lata Mangeshkar Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
The two-day old baby girl born on Saturday was put on ventilator on Monday morning but died later in the day. The baby was diagnosed with a rare Harlequin Ichthyosis, born with a thick keratin layer of cracked skin. Her mouth was wide open, with two red bulges in place of eyes and no ears, reported The Hindustan Times.
“Harlequin ichthyosis is a very rare severe genetic skin disease. In such cases, the child’s whole body is encased in an ‘armor’ of thick white plates of skin, separated with deep cracks. In addition, the eyes, ears, private parts and the appendages may be abnormally contracted,” Dr. Avinash Banait of Lata Mangeshkar Medical College told Mens XP.
Born to a 23-year-old woman from Amravati in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra the baby weighed 1.8 kilograms. Her father is a poor farmer.
The mother was shocked to see the mother and broke down after seeing her. The family was also shocked to see the baby. The baby was put on a ventilator as she was suffering from breath problems.
As the internal organs of such babies are visible, such babies are prone to infections. The condition of the skin also causes dehydration.
As the family of the woman was a poor one, they hadn’t undergone any checkups.
“Even otherwise skin disorders, especially Harlequin Ichthyosis, cannot be picked up on conventional ultrasonography,” Dr. Mitra told Hindustan Times.
A photo of the baby had gone viral on social media.
In 1984, such a baby was born in Pakistan and she lived till 2008. Another such baby was born in the US in 1994. The chances of the disorder are once in 300,000 births.
