Woman was killed near Thiruvananthapuram.
The government of Kerala, on Thursday, decided to grand Rs. 5 lakh as compensation for the family of Sheeluamma who was killed after a pack of ferocious stray dogs attacked her last week.
An exgratia of Rs. 50,000 will be given to 52-year-old Daisy, a neighbor of Sheeluamma, who suffered injuries in the dog attack.
“We have also sanctioned an exgratia of Rs 50,000 to another lady who was also attacked by dogs the same day. We gave this amount as this was the only application before the government,” said Local Administration Minister K.T. Jaleel.
The 65-year-old Sheeluamma from Pulluvilla, Thiruvananthapuram, was killed on August 19 when she went to the seafront to use a toilet in the evening. As she did not return for quite some time, her son went to look for her and saw a pack of stray dogs attacking his mother.
Though the woman was rushed to the hospital immediately, the doctors couldn’t save her life. It was reported that the dogs had eaten some of her body parts. She used to go to seafront as her home lacked a toilet.
The gruesome incident has raised many questions regarding the safety of people in the state of Kerala. While people demand to kill ferocious stray dogs, animal right activists are arguing for alternative ways such as animal birth control, and disposal of waste to solve the problem.
