The duo bond over their South Indian roots, idlis and well, Tasters’ Choice coffee jars.
What is one thing that is common between California Senator and presidential hopeful Kamala Harris and comedian actress Mindy Kaling?
Apart from the fact that they both have South Indian roots and grew up eating rice and yoghurt, the two ladies also discovered something uncannily Indian about their homes.
Kaling invited Harris for a cook-out session at her Los Angeles home and the California Senator couldn’t help but notice how the spices were stored in Kaling’s kitchen in Tasters’ Choice coffee jars – just the way, Harris’ mom used to stock them too!
For the uninitiated, it may be a very inherently Indian thing to do. To recycle empty coffee jars instead of buying Ball mason jars to stock our daals and masalas is perhaps as common in an Indian household as re-purposing an empty cookie tin to stock buttons!

And two of the most popular Indian origin women in America, right now couldn’t help but bond on the discovery. In a relatable video shared by Harris on her social media this Wednesday, one saw the duo cooking a dosa.
While Harris has always talked about her Indian mom and how her influence shaped her life, in many ways, the fun cook-out video seemed like a vehement acknowledgement of her Indian origin.
During the video, when Mindy says, we are both Indians, Harris says, ‘Yes, Yes, Yes,’ asserting an identity, some have accused her in the past of not completely owning it up.
The light-hearted video, where the two shared their love of Indian food as well as cute anecdotes from their growing-up years is just the thing you may need, away from the cacophony of electoral innuendos.
The recipe of a dosa – an Indian style crepe, was of course the added bonus.
The video shared by two of the very popular women in America today was a hit on social media and celebs and fans couldn’t help but comment on it.
Indian American actor Kal Penn re-tweeted the video and marveled at the fact that the funniest woman on TV and a future president nominee are both of Indian origin.

Twitter users were thrilled to stumble upon this unexpected cook-out session and some even began sharing pictures of their pantry with spices stocked in re-used jars, while some others lamented how Tasters’ Choice have now swapped those lovely glass jars for sappy plastic ones.
