Targeting activist Greta Thunberg, Donald Trump Jr calls India and China worst polluters.
Just as New Delhi may be getting ready to host US President Donald Trump, an unsavory tweet about India’s rising pollution levels by Trump’s son has left many in India a wee-bit embarrassed.
Donald Trump Jr took to Twitter Thursday to advise Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg to go to China and India, calling the two Asian nations the “worst offenders” when it came to pollution.
“Rather than try to pretend she knows something about economics she could further her cause much more by going to places like China and India and make them do something about their pollution. Why won’t she go directly to the worst offenders?” he asked
Even though Trump Jr’s tweet can be scarcely contended, the remark especially at a time when India is readying to host President Trump’s visit that may have major global and economic impact, has left many in India red-faced.
Trump Jr.’s tweet immediately went viral and people began posting their reactions.
A Twitter user @TheRight Melissa posted a cartoon depicting how India and China are left out of mention by Thunberg as she directs her criticism at Trump.
“Greta doesn’t care about the environment. If she did she would be touring China & India, the biggest polluters, with her lectures,” she wrote.
“It’s not about climate, it’s economic warfare against the west. The left wants to destroy western civilization, its freedoms & its wealth.”
It may be noted that Thunberg actually addressed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly during the UN Climate Change Conference – COP25 in Madrid in December.
She had said: “Dear Mr Modi, you need to take action now against the climate crisis, not just talking about it because if you keep going on like this, doing business as usual, and just talking about and bragging about the little victories, you are going to fail.
“And if you fail, you are going to be seen as one of the worst villains in human history in the future. And you don’t want that.”
India and China rank at 30 and 61 respectively in the 2019 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) report .
