WASHINGTON, DC: All Andria and Zoey Green wanted was to raise $105 dollars for a Father’s Day present by selling lemonade from their own street side stand. Instead, they got to learn about their city’s permit laws up close and personally.
“We were trying to raise some money to take our dad to Splash Kingdom,” 8-year-old Andria explained to KLTV.
They had only been open for about an hour and had already made more than $25, when police showed up, initially because they were set up near the curb in a residential street.
“A code enforcement officer and the chief, she called me to the side and said we needed a permit,” their mother, Sandi Evans recalled. “I think that’s ridiculous. I think they’re 7 and 8 and they’re just trying to make money for their own cause,” she continued.
After the story went viral, the city of Overton, Texas agreed to waive the $150 fee for a “Peddler’s Permit,” but the health department may prove a tougher hurdle.
A video of the conversation between the police officer and the children’s mother was released on Wednesday, during which Evans exclaims, “I knew we had to for garage sales and stuff like that, but I didn’t know little kids had to for a lemonade stand.”
Police Chief Clyde Carter informed KLTV that he stands by the decision. “It is a lemonade stand, but they also have a permit that they are required to get,” he said. “We have to follow by the state health guidelines. They have to have a permit if they’re going to do the lemonade stands.”
The indomitable Green sisters say they will set up their lemonade stand this Saturday, but they will be accepting donations this time around.
