A Delhi Police officer, who was seen traveling in a metro train drunk, has been suspended by the Commissioner on the basis of the video footage that went viral on social media.
Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi suspended the cop who can be identified by his uniform as a constable with the Delhi police. He is also facing departmental inquiry in addition to the suspension slapped on him.
Bassi said to the media, “We are going to take very strict action against the official.”
He also added that officers are never allowed to be drunk while in their uniform, even if he/she is off-duty. Even though the current incident is one-of-its-kind, “an exception”, it is totally unacceptable, said Bassi.
A senior police officer said the drunken constable has been identified as Head Constable Salim PK, a native of Kerala, posted that the Police Lines in the outer district.
The footage went viral during the weekend, but the police are yet to confirm the exact date when the footage was recorded.
The viral video which has Salim in a dreadfully drunken state (at one point he even falls down) was watched by thousands who dropped comments questioning the safety of commuters and the violation of DMRC rules.
The video first appeared on the wall of a Facebook user, who also wrote “Delhi police….sadaiv apki Suraksha me tatpar.” (Delhi Police is always there for your protection).
In the undated video clip, the Delhi cop can be seen trying to find a grip to stand by himself, failing which he falls down in the compartment. In the final few seconds of the video the commuters can be seen trying to help him come back to his feet.
What made things serious for the Delhi policeman was his dishevelled uniform. Without it, he would have gone unrecognized like other everyday commuters who go high and choose the metro for safe transport back home.
