Controversy has not affected tourism, says Sharma.

The India government has said that there is no evidence to prove that Taj Mahal was once a Hindu temple.
Union culture minister Mahesh Sharma said in the Lok Sabha that the government has not found any evidence proving Taj Mahal was a Hindu temple. Sharma was replying to a query about evidence claiming Taj Mahal was a temple.
The query was ordered after a suit was filed in an Agra court by a group of advocates from Agra who alleged that Taj Mahal was once a Hindu temple.
A team of six lawyers claimed that there was substantial evidence to prove that the monument was originally a Shiva temple. They also argued that the ownership of Taj Mahal should be transferred to Hindus and they should be permitted to offer prayers.
Sharma said that the government was aware of the suit and has not observed any effect on tourism because of the controversy.
The Archaeological Survey of India, that manages the monument, had earlier rejected the claims that Taj Mahal is a Hindu temple.
Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. One of the wonders of the world, Taj Mahal, was completed in 1653.
It is considered the best example of Mughal art and symbol of eternal love. Taj Mahal received the UNESCO World Heritage Status in 1983.
