Balvinder Singh, a 28-year old electronic engineer, who attacked his parents with a sword and went on a rampage attacking 22 other people, was fatally shot dead by police in Telangana’s Karimnagar District on Tuesday morning.
Police officials explained that Singh was upset after he failed in the civil service exams and was suffering from depression. Earlier, he was working in Bengaluru for an IT company.
Reports said Singh got into an altercation with his parents, Amruth Singh and Baby Kaur, and injured them with a sword. Then he rushed out into the street and attacked pedestrians who were near him, police alleged.
“This morning at about 6:30 we got a call from Laxmi Nagar area about a person roaming with a sword, slashing everyone he saw on the street. When our team reached there, he even attacked two of our men and tried to snatch a pistol from our CI. In unavoidable circumstances, our officer had to shot at him,” L Subbarayudu, additional SP (operations), Karimnagar was quoted as saying by The Hindustan Times.
“It was bloodshed at his home and in the street. If he had reached the bus stand nearby, more people would have been injured. This seems to be a clear case of depression though we are probing the matter in detail,” the police official added.
According to an eyewitness, it was a dangerous scene as an auto driver, three policemen and a many other innocent victims were bleeding profusely.
A group of policemen rushed to the spot and fired at him when he refused to throw down the sword but instead attacked the police.
Balvinder died three hours after being admitted to the government Hospital. His parents, who suffered serious injuries, are in critical condition.
