NEW DELHI: Actor Paresh Rawal is the richest candidate currently vying for a Lok Sabha seat in the state of Gujarat, with a total family net worth of Rs. 79.40 crore.
The figure comes from mandatory paperwork filed by Rawal; all candidates running for election are required to reveal their total assets. According to the paperwork, Rawal has movable assets worth Rs. 52.72 crore to his name alone, and another Rs. 15.56 crore in immovable assets, such as real estate holdings. Rawal’s wife, Swaroop, has Rs. 2.75 crore in movable asset and an additional Rs. 6 crore in immovable assets, while Rawal’s two sons, Aniruddha and Aditya, have Rs. 2.73 crore in total assets between the two of them.
In terms of financial liabilities, Rawal, a BJP candidate, has claimed Rs. 5.54 crore to his name and an additional Rs. 1.05 crore for his wife. These liabilities are composed largely of bank loans, although the specifics of what these loans were granted for was not revealed.
Rawal is contending for the Lok Sabha seat representing the Ahmedabad-East constituency in Gujarat, the same state that BJP Prime Minister candidate Narendra Modi hails from. Rawal also belongs to the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), and he leads every other politicians running for the Lok Sabha from his state.
The current Member of Parliament (MP) from Navsari, C.R. Patil, came in second to Rawal, with Rs. 74.47 crore worth of assets. Patil, also a member of the BJP, reported much higher liabilities than Rawal, however – Rs. 40.58 crore. Another Gujarat candidates who ranked highly in terms of their wealth are Congress Party member Shakersinh Vaghela (Rs. 41.35 crore).
In the Ahmedabad-East constituency, Rawal will be up against Dinesh Waghela, who was announced last week as the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) candidate for the seat. Waghela is a former tea vendor turned politician, similar to Modi, who has been a core member of “Team Anna,” the group associated with AAP scion and renowned activist Anna Hazare. The seat is also contested by the Congress Party’s Himmatsinh Patel.
An actor for 30 years, Rawal has received numerous accolades for his film work over the span of his career. He has won three Filmfare Awards, and the National Film Award in 1994. Earlier this year, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor bestowed by the Indian government, for his work in the film industry.
