NEW DELHI: Nine Indian scientists were presented the 2014 NASI-Scopus Young Scientist Awards, by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, Department of Atomic Energy & Department of Space, at The Lalit Hotel here, on Tuesday.
The awards were announced by Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), according to a press release.
The award honors young researchers who are building their careers in academic research and helps them gain recognition of their work.
This year’s NASI-Scopus Young Scientist Awards program attracted nearly 650 applications from multiple premier research institutions across India. Applications were judged by a panel of 31 subject experts from India’s academic community. Elsevier provided quantitative analyses using data from Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature.
Dr. K. Kasturirangan, President, National Academy of Sciences, India, said in a statement: “Each year, the creativity of individual scientists is celebrated with pride, and this initiative does so by giving out awards to great young minds, across several disciplines in India.”
Youngsuk “Y.S.” Chi, Chairman of Elsevier, said in a statement, “These young researchers have already made a significant impact within the academic community, and their future achievements will inevitably shape the world’s scientific discourse.”
The award winners are:
Agriculture: Dr. Vigneshwaran Nadanathangam – Senior Scientist, Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology, Mumbai.
Biological Sciences: Dr. Sanjeev Das – Staff Scientist-V, National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi.
Chemistry: Dr. Rahul Banerjee – Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.
Earth, Oceanographic & Environmental Sciences: Dr. Suryendu Dutta – Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.
Engineering: Dr. Neelesh B. Mehta – Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
Mathematics: Dr. Partha Sarathi Chakraborty – Professor G, The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai.
Medicine: Dr. Narendran Gopalan – Scientist C, National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis, Chennai/
Physics: Dr. Sushil Appasaheb Mujumdar – Associate Professor G, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
Social Sciences: Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh – Professor, Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow.
