Medical negligence or illegal organ trade racket?

BENGALURU: The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in New Delhi has come under fire after Pavan Kumar, father of a six-year-old girl from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh approached the Hauz Khas police station in the capital and complained about a doctor at the institute removing both the kidneys of his daughter.
The girl had earlier developed complications in the left kidney and physicians had suggested removing it, as her other kidney was in good condition.
Kumar said that the incident came to light when his daughter reported severe pain after the surgery. A CT scan revealed that bother her kidneys were missing.
AIIMS has ordered for a high level enquiry on the incident. The investigation team is headed by senior professors of India’s most prestigious medical institution.
A senior doctor at AIIMS was quoted by DNA, saying, “The allegations made by the patient’s father are of serious nature. A high-powered committee of senior professors has been constituted to probe the matter and clear the issues. The committee already held a meeting on May 20 and will be again meeting this week and then submit a report to AIIMS administration.”
Pavan Kumar approached AIIMS last year seeking treatment for his daughter who was diagnosed with kidney failure. The medical report of the girl suggests that her right kidney was fully functional before the surgery on March 14.
Kumar was quoted as saying by DNA, “I then asked the doctor who, however, did not answer my queries properly. I tried speaking to the AIIMS administration failing which I approached the Hauz Khas police.”
The incident has hampered the trustworthiness of AIIMS, which is one of the safe havens for the poor in the country who seek quality medical treatment. Questions are also being asked about whether this is a case of medical negligence or part of illegal organ trade racket.
