BENGALURU: A Hindu-Muslim couple in India took the extreme decision to end their life in front of the love monument, Taj Mahal, after their families opposed to them getting married due to religious differences.
According to a report that appeared in The Times of India, the couple named Rajveer Singh and Shabnam Ali made Taj Mahal their suicide point and slit their throats on Wednesday afternoon.

The lovers, Rajveer, a Hindu and Shabnam, a Muslim, are currently getting treatment in a hospital and were forbidden by their families from getting married due to the difference in their religion.
“This couple, one of whom is a Hindu and the other a Muslim, tried to commit suicide at the Taj,” said police deputy superintendent Aseem Chaudhary.
“The girl cut her throat first followed by the boy,” he said.
In many Indian communities, marriage outside caste or religion is still considered a taboo and there exist village panchayats known as Khaps that prosecute people and even order for honor killing in some cases.
Times of India quoted Rajveer Singh saying “Both Shabnam and I tried hard to convince our parents that they should allow us to get married, but the boundaries of religion remained the biggest hurdle.”
“We did this after failing at all possible ways to be together.”
The couple was found lying unconsciously inside the premise of Taj Mahal by one of the guards of Taj Nature Walk and were immediately rushed to the hospital.
The family of the girl, currently in a state of shock, told media that they were willing to get the couple married, but they delayed it as they boy was unemployed. The version of Shabnam’s family was ridiculed by Rajveer.
