Walmart Foundation, the social responsibility arm of Walmart, has committed Rs. 1 crore (around $150,000) towards the relief and rehabilitation efforts in the flood affected parts of Chennai and other areas in Tamil Nadu.
Along with financial support, Walmart India associates have contributed food, clothes and other essential supplies to the NGO Goonj to help in rehabilitation.
“The Walmart Foundation has committed Rs. 1 crore to Charities Aid Foundation India (CAF India) for the provision of health and hygiene kits, food baskets, safe drinking water and tarpaulins,” Walmart said in a statement.
The Press Trust of India quoted Krish Iyer, President & CEO, Walmart India saying, “We stand by the people of Chennai and neighboring areas of Tamil Nadu who have been affected by the floods.
“In addition to the relief grant of Rs. 1 crore by Walmart Foundation, we have pledged our support to the community through voluntary in-kind donations and volunteering activities,” he added.
Earlier, the US-based multinational IT firm, Cognizant, committed $40 million to help residents, its employees and business partners in Chennai by undertaking relief and rehabilitation activities in the city.
