A sting operation carried out by India Today TV channel has led to the shocking revelation that three lawyers who attacked Jawaharlal Nehru University students Union (JNUSU) President Kanhaiya Kumar and some journalists outside Patiala House court on February 15, beat Kumar for three hours when he was in police custody.
The sting operation recorded by India Today team also brought out the truth that the attack outside Patiala House court was not accidental, but it was planned and coordinated. Also, the lawyers had the support of Delhi police to carry out their plan.
The three lawyers who got caught in the sting operation are Vikram Singh Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma. The lawyers claimed that they thrashed Kanhaiya Kumar for three hours when he was in police custody and he wet his pants during the beating.
“He said ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’ We made him say it. We bashed him for three hours. He wet his pants. We beat him up so much,” said Chauhan.
They also said that they would not leave him even if they were charged with murder.
The sting operation has led the ongoing discussion on JNU to a new level with political leaders cutting across party lines coming up and demanding strong action against the lawyers who took the law into their hands.
“India Today investigation is very serious. Those lawyers must be immediately arrested. Can’t allow lawless lawyers to go free,” said BJP MP RK Singh.
The Supreme Court of India has asked senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan to file a detailed petition regarding the operation when he mentioned about it. The court will verify the story afterwards.
Understanding the seriousness of the issue, the government also has said that it was ready to discuss the issue in Parliament. BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi has approached Lok Sabha speaker to fix a date for discussing the JNU row.
The budget session of Parliament that began on Tuesday is likely to be immersed in clamor due to the JNU row.
