Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the students union of Jawaharlal Nehru University, in New Delhi, landed in another controversy after a former student of the university posted a document on Facebook showing the disciplinary action taken by the university authorities against him for misbehaving with her.
Kumar has been in headlines after being arrested last month in connection with a program conducted at the university in which anti-national slogans were raised.
Kamlesh Parmeshwari posted on Facebook the complaint she had filed with the JNU authorities and the proctor’s verdict on the complaint, on Wednesday.
In the complaint, Parmeshwari alleged that Kumar misbehaved with her when she questioned him urinating on the road on June 10, 2015.
“He came very close to me and started threatening me in a very aggressive body language. He called me ‘psycho, mental go to some asylum. It’s my hostel area, I can do whatever I wanted to do…. and threatened me ‘dekh lunga tereko’ (I will fix you),” she said in the complaint.
“Mr Kanhaiya Kumar Addressed JNU community on Woman’s Day. What an Irony! Proctor Officer order copy finding him Guilty of Threatening a female and Misbehaving with her. This was in the context of my complaint against him in the case of ‘Public urination, Misbehavior and threatening’. Ma ki ek mahiney ki tankha ke barabar jurmana bhara hai is JNU ke krantikari ne! He has paid fine equal to one month salary of his poor mother! What a poor fellow he is!” she wrote on her Facebook post.
The letter of the university posted on Facebook confirms that the authorities had taken action against Kumar.
“It is to confirm that an office order dated October 16, 2015, was issued by the chief proctor for strict disciplinary action against Kanhaiya Kumar and he was fined Rs 3,000,” the university said.
But Kumar’s organization, All India Students Federation (AISF), a Communist party, came up in support of him saying that the move was to divert attention and the allegations were completely fake.
“These cases were brought to divert attention away from the Occupy UGC movement of which Kanhaiya was a part. Smriti Irani was the minister and we had the same registrar at that time. These allegations are completely false,” said Rahila Perveen of AISF.
Meanwhile, the police have registered another case against Kumar on a complaint filed by The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) alleging that he again raised anti-national slogans on campus.
Kumar allegedly made the statements against the Indian Army while addressing a student march on international women’s day.
“No matter how much you try to stop us, we will speak up against human rights violations. We will raise our voice against AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Power Act). While we have a lot of respect for our soldiers, we will still talk about the fact that in Kashmir women are raped by security personnel,” he said.
“Despite the submission of an undertaking before the court, Kanhaiya has yet again addressed a gathering of students and uttered poisonous words against the Indian Army, labelling them as rapists of Kashmiri Women,” a BJYM statement said.
BJYM has also filed a complaint against JNU professor Nivedita Menon for allegedly making statements that India is illegally occupying Kashmir.
In another incident, a man tried to assault Kanhaiya Kumar at the university premises on Thursday evening shouting that he wanted to teach him a lesson for abusing the country and raising anti-national slogans.
The man who is an outsider was escorted off by the security officials.
“The man attacked me amidst all these people. But he was still escorted out of here without any harm,” Kumar said.
