In a shocking and unique incident, a 17-year-old student committed suicide in Kota, Rajasthan, on Thursday after realizing that her score in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) was more than enough for her to qualify to study as an engineer, which depressed her, as she wanted to study something else.
A report in The Times of India said that Kriti Tiwari jumped from the fifth floor of the apartment where she lived with his father. In her suicide note recovered from her room, she said that she was not satisfied with the result that was published on Wednesday.
“Kriti has implied in the note that she didn’t want to pursue engineering, but Bachelor of Science (BSc). She wanted to become an astrophysicist. It’s strange because one can also become an astrophysicist after graduating from an IIT,” SHO of Jawahar Nagar police station Harshit Bharati, told The Times of India.
“Her JEE (Mains) results came out on Wednesday. Though the cut-off marks were 100, she scored 144. As per the coaching officials, it was a decent score and she had a good chance of cracking IIT,” he added.
Neighbors rushed to MBS hospital with Tiwari, but the doctors declared her brought dead. This is the fifth student suicide reported this year from Kota which is famous for medical and engineering entrance coaching.
She used to live in Indira Vihar area with her father Anshuman who runs a travel agency. Her mother was living in Ghaziabad. When the incident happened, her father was not at the house and some neighbors called her mother when they saw a girl jumping from the fifth floor. She immediately contacted Anshuman and asked him to rush to the spot.
According to the police, Tiwari moved to Kota two years back where she joined a senior secondary school and took admission in a JEE coaching centre. Her senior secondary results are yet to be published.
The police have registered a case and started an investigation. They handed over her body to the family after conducting a post-mortem examination.
