A six-year-old boy suffered serious burn injuries after his father accidentally dropped him on hot coals during a ritual in Jalandhar, Punjab.
Raja, while carrying his son, Karthik, was walking on red-hot coal embers when he lost his balance and fell during the Maa Maariamma Mela event, a Times of India report stated.
Bystanders rushed to rescue the child and took him to hospital, but family members refused to help saying that they had faith that god would heal him.
Manoranjan Kalia, local BJP MLA, who went to the hospital to see the child and father later said that Karthik had suffered 20 per cent burn injuries, while his father had suffered 20-25 per cent burn injuries.
“I have provided them financial assistance of 10,000 rupees and sent them to Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences” Kalia said.
Devotees across the country had gathered in Jalandhar’s Qazi Mandi locality to celebrate the festival and honour the goddess Mariyamma.
The ritual is performed by fasting for seven days before walking barefoot on the burning coal to appease the deity.

Your headlines makes it appear that the father purposefully dropped his son. And you are wrong to state that the family refused to take him to the hospital. The Hindu Newspaper clearly mentions that he was rushed to the hospital. Please dont resort to Yellow Journalism with misleading and false headlines
“The boy was admitted on Sunday night in the emergency ward. He has burn injuries on his limbs and on one side of his trunk,” doctor Jangpreet Singh said . Source: http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/father-drops-son-on-redhot-coal-during-ritual/article8724984.ece
