The Punjab Police have summoned Aam Aadmi Pary MLA in Delhi, Naresh Yadav, to join the investigation in connection with the alleged Quran sacrilege case in Malerkotla on June 24.
Yadav, who is MLA from Mehrauli, has been booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 109 (punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where on express provision is made for its punishment) and 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintain harmony).
The main accused of the case Vijay Kumar, a Delhi-based businessman, named the MLA while questioning and the police found corroborative evidence against him.
“He has been asked to appear on July 5 at 11 am at the CIA office in Sangrur, which is handling the case,” senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prithpal Singh Thind said.
Violence had erupted after the alleged sacrilege incident which had taken place in Malerkotla on June 24 in which a mob had even attacked the house of local Akali Dal MLA Farzana Nissara Khatoon, wife of former Punjab DGP.
Several policemen, including a DSP, were injured as about 300 to 400 protesters had thrown stones and torched a car.
Yadav is a co-in-charge of AAP affairs in Punjab, however, denied the charges, saying it was a conspiracy to malign the party’s image ahead of the assembly polls.
AAP convener and Delhi CM Aravind Kejriwal started his three-day visit to Punjab on Sunday and expected to attend an iftaar party in Malerkotla on Monday at around 6.30 pm. Reports says that Kejriwal will continue with his plans as scheduled notwithstanding the chances of him being manhandled in wake of the recent controversy.
