Tamil Nadu CM in hospital since Sep. 22.
Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa could be moved out of Critical Care Unit (CCU) to a private room, and be allowed to go home soon, said reports.
Senior AIADMK leader C. Ponnaiyan told IANS that the lung infection of the party supreme is under control and she has passed the critical stage.
“The lung infection is under control. She has passed the critical stage. The respiratory system is being weaned away. It is being used on and off,” he said.
The 68-year-old leader has been under critical care at Apollo Hospital in Chennai since September 22 with fever and dehydration. The hospital has arranged a special room from where the chief minister can discharge her duties while undergoing further treatment. According to reports, she could be discharged in three weeks if she recovers in the same pace.
“Her health condition has improved now. The remaining health issues can be addressed while she is in a room or even at her residence,” Ponnaiyan added. “The fever was brought down by appropriate medication.”
The leader was put on respiratory support considering her condition. She is being constantly monitored by a panel of expert doctors including cardiologists, respiratory physicians, and consultants for infectious diseases, diabetologist, and endocrinologist. The team includes British doctor Richard Beale, consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Guy’s and St. Thomas Hospital, London, doctors from AIIMS, New Delhi and from Apollo Hospitals.
Ponnaiyan said that Jayalalithaa had started interacting with people and was consuming semi-fluid food. She needed to undergo physiotherapy treatment after discharge to recover completely.
A Times of India report said that she would be allowed to go home soon, as per her wish.
Several rumors had surfaced about the health condition of Jayalalithaa after she was admitted to the hospital.
Earlier, the Madras High Court had ordered Tamil Nadu state government to inform the court about the health status of the chief minister. While Jayalalithaa is being treated at the hospital, retired IAS officer Sheela Balakrishnan, 62, a confidante of the chief minister, has taken control of the state administration.
