Punjab police have arrested three men alleged to be involved in smuggling of weapons and Pakistani SIM cards, on Monday.
The trio has been identified as Gurjant Singh alias Bhollu (26), Sandeep Singh (25), both residents of Haviliyan village in Tarn Taran and Jatinder Singh alias Jindi (34) of Ludhiana.
Police have seized 2 AK47s, 5 pistols, 30 mobile phones and a Pakistan-registered mobile SIM card from the trio.
They were arrested from Kharar town, a sub-division of SAS Nagar district, barely 18 Kms. from Mohali district.
“We are yet to ascertain whether the SIM was put to use or not. Though the SIM was procured by the accused to contact their supplier, identified as Imtiaz, in Pakistan,” SAS Nagar SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar was quoted by saying The Hindustan Times.
“At many places along the border the Indian network does not work, therefore to co-ordinate with the supplier the accused had procured Pakistani SIM. As of now only one SIM card has been recovered,” Bhullar said.
“The gang is primarily into drug smuggling, kidnapping, extortion and the weapons they had smuggled through Pakistan to enhance their fighting capacity with the police in case of an encounter,” he added.
According to reports, weapons seized bear markings of China, Pakistan and Brazil.
