A-40-year-old man was killed on Wednesday morning after being hit by a delivery van today in west Delhi.
The victim, identified as Matibool, a resident of West Bengal, lay bleeding on the road for close to 90 minutes before they reached the spot, police said. No one came to his help despite several passerby seeing him writhing in pain and one of them even went near him to take away his mobile phone.
The whole incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed near Meraj cinema in Subhash Nagar where Matibool was hit by the van in the wee hours.
The accident took place around 5.30 am but was reported only around 7 am. Matibool died due to excessive bleeding, and doctors declared him brought dead, when the police team rushed him to a nearby hospital.
Matibool, a father of two drove an e-rickshaw on day and worked as a security guard at night. He has two sons and two daughters.
“He used to walk by this spot everyday on his way home, and stop for a cup of tea,” NDTV quoted a shop owner who knows Matibool well.
“The tempo driver got off his vehicle immediately to take a look at the injured man. But instead of taking him to a hospital, he got back into his tempo and drove away,” said an officer.
Most people who might have seen Matibool on the road may have ignored him for a drunk, the officer added.
“We formed a team to identify the killer tempo driver and arrest him. Efforts are also on to identify the rickshaw puller who took away Matibool’s mobile phone,” Hindustan Times quoted the officer.
A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered.
