Based on the television series of the same name, action comedy Baywatch features a superstar cast starring the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, and Priyanka Chopra. Nevertheless the star-studded cast couldn’t save the film from sinking, as Baywatch managed to reel in a meager $28.5 million over the course of five days in over 3,400 theaters against a budget of $69 million.
Baywatch opened to $18.1 million this weekend, placing it third behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which earned $62.2 and $19.9 million, respectively. Behind Baywatch were Alien: Covenant, Everything, Everything, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, which grossed $10.5, $6.2 and $4.4 million respectively.
Initially projected to gross around $40 million this Memorial Day weekend, Baywatch has been met with negative reviews from critics. The film has a 19% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes” and an average rating of 4.2/10. The R-rated comedy must hope to fare better in international markets, where the film will open in 31 territories next weekend. This weekend featured a release in only one international territory, that being Taiwan, where the film opened to $870,000, taking second place in Taiwanese markets.Next weekend isn’t looking too well for Baywatch either as it will face its expected second weekend drop and the release of Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman and Fox’s release of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.
Despite its poor opening weekend performance, plans for a Baywatch sequel have already been in discussion with Johnson and Efron likely to return.
