The yet unnamed comedy will be based on the struggles of a first generation Indian American girl.
Looks like there can never be enough of desis on television. Just when we were getting transfixed at Vir Das and his suave new avatar on ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier, here comes another desi rising news from the Netflix stable.
On Wednesday, the streaming service announced that it has ordered a coming-of-age comedy series from Mindy Kaling. Even though the series remains unnamed as yet, the idea of a semi-autobiographical story from the Office star was enough to excite TV watchers.
Later in the afternoon, Kaling, too, tweeted the news about her joining the Nextflix family. She wrote that she and Lang Fisher are working on a brand-new Netflix comedy series that revolved around the life of a contemporary first-generation Indian American girl.
She tweeted: “I’m joining the @netflix fam! … @loulielang and I are working on a brand-new @netflix TV comedy about the life of a modern-day first generation Indian American teenage girl. Get ready for lots of relatable, awkward teen moments… More coming soon.”

The Brooklyn-based producer and writer Fisher has worked with Kaling before on The Mindy Project. The new show would be co-written, co-created and produced by Kaling and Fisher together.
Amongst the desi fans of Kaling, the news was particularly exciting as the plot about a first-generation Indian American woman finds a common chord with many immigrant millennials in the United States. The show would borrow from Kaling’s own growing up years spent in Massachusetts.
In the recent past, Kaling has been involved in a project for Hulu that was the production of mini-series adapted from Hollywood hit Four Weddings and a Funeral. The show is also slated to be aired this year.
Kaling rose to fame on American entertainment with her role of Kelly Kapoor on Emmy-winning series The Office. Her next, The Mindy Project, brought her to mainstream. The highly popular show aired for six seasons on Fox and Hulu.
Kaling, author of two memoirs, has often detailed about her life as an immigrant in America. Kaling’s another ambitious project, Late Nights, a comedy drama, starring Emma Thompson and directed by Nisha Ganatra, will be releasing in the United States this June.
