A heartwarming video of a 10-year-old girl teaching her dog sign language went viral on Facebook with 10,000 shares and more than 280,000 views.
The little girl Julia and her 7-month-old puppy Walter, both were born deaf. Both of them became best friends from the minute they met and Julia’s mom adopted Walter from the Pasadena Humane Society.
Now Julia is teaching her dog a whole new way to communicate. She is using signs to teach Walter how to sit, ask for food and respond to his name.
The video from the Parasadena Humane Society and SPCA narrates the story of Julia and Walter, which begins with Julia’s mother, Chrissy, realizing the two were meant to be together.
“When I first held Julia, since she couldn’t really hear my voice, she would smell my neck,” Chrissy says in the video. “And when I first held Walter, he did almost the same exact thing.”
Several people wrote comments on Facebook and shared their own personal stories.
“Hello, I’m deaf. My puppy Duke is from SA tx. I was looking for dog for a home and I got him. I was unexpected that he is deaf too. I’m definitely keep him and teach him sign language. I feel so lucky to have him. I love him so much” Jane Acosta commented, along with a photo.
“He (Walter) was initially overlooked by people who were not looking for a dog that couldn’t hear, Luckily, Chrissy jumped at the chance to unite her daughter with a dog just like her” Jamie Holeman with the Pasadena Humane Society told to CBS News.
“It’s really amazing to see how this video is affecting and touching people in different ways, we’ve noticed among the deaf community this video has struck a particular chord.” Holeman added.
